Week 6 MLB Injury Report

Justin Masterson- Right shoulder tendonitis
Even though the Red Sox are saying shoulder tendonitis is the reason for Masterson’s trip to the DL, We all know they are just covering up the fact that they want him out of their rotation.   Masterson has posted a 6.37 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP over seven starts this year.  Look for him to get some rest and some work in Triple A before returning to the club’s rotation.

Chase Whitley- UCL tear
Whitley was removed from his start Thursday with an apparent elbow injury. An MRI Friday revealed a small tear of his UCL.  At this point surgery is definitely a possibility, which would shut him down for the rest of the year.  The Yankees have activated Chris Capuano of the DL to take Whitley’s spot in the rotation.

Doug Fister- Right forearm flexor strain
Fister exited Thursday’s game with right forearm tightness after a long rain delay and the Nationals placed Fister on the 15-day DL shortly thereafter. It is safe to assume that Fister will miss more than the minimum 15 days.  A.J. Cole will take the open spot in the Nat’s rotation until Fister can return.

Jarred Cosart- Right hamstring tightness
Cosart left Wednesday’s game in the sixth inning with tightness in his hamstring.  The severity of the injury has not been released, but Cosart was hobbling before he left the game so I wouldn’t be surprised if he missed a start or two.  Cosart’s spot in the rotation may be in jeopardy having posted an average 7.04 ERA over his last three starts and with Henderson Alvarez returning soon.

Jean Segura- Right pinkie fracture
The Brewers are unable to catch a break this year.  Segura will face at least a 15 day stint on the DL after fracturing his pinkie.  With the injured finger being on his throwing hand, odds are he will be out of the lineup for a few weeks.  Segura has been one of the more productive shortstops this year so you may have to use a roster spot to keep him around during the injury.

Kelly Johnson- Right oblique strain
The red hot Johnson has been placed on the 15-day DL after straining his oblique in Wednesday’s game.  As we have seen with many players this year, oblique injuries tend to keep players out for longer than initially expected.  Johnson’s multiple position eligibility will be the toughest hole to fill for fantasy owners over the next month.

Wil Myers- left wrist tendonitis
Myers reinjured his wrist during batting practice on Tuesday.  It looks like Myers will be able to avoid the DL, but the injury is troubling as this is the second time this season he has missed time because of his wrist.  Although a timetable has not been set, the Padres hope to have Myers back after the weekend.

Jon Jay- left wrist tendonitis
Jay has been placed on the 15-day DL, retroactive to May 10th.  The Cardinals are hoping that Jay will be ready to return right at 15 days, but will be cautious as this is the same wrist that Jay had surgery on last October.  For the time being Peter Bourjos will be the Cardinals center fielder and leadoff man.

Justin Morneau- Concussion like symptoms
Morneau was pulled from Wednesday’s game due to feeling light-headed after diving for a ball in the eighth inning.  Morneau has a long history of concussions so expect the Rockies’ doctors to be ultra cautious with Morneau.  As of now the Rockies have placed him on the 7-day DL, but don’t be surprised if he misses more time than that.
