Week 17 MLB Injury Report

Jason Kipnis- Sore right shoulder
Kipnis was placed on the DL Monday with a sore right shoulder.  This seems like more of a precautionary move as Kipnis’ MRI showed no structural damage.  Kipnis has had a monster year so fantasy owners will be happy to hear that the Indians expect him to be able to return to the field when eligible to return August 17th

Freddie Freeman- Strained oblique
Freeman tweaked his oblique Monday night forcing him to leave the game.  Although the injury did not seem severe, the Braves decided to put Freeman on the 15-day DL Tuesday.  With the Braves season all but over, the Braves will be very cautious with their star first baseman.

Adam Eaton- Jammed left shoulder
Eaton left Friday’s game after making a nice diving catch on a ball hit by Ben Zobrist.  As of now the White Sox are considering Eaton day-to-day and it appears he will avoid the DL.  Eaton has been on fire since the All-Star break with a .494 OBP, 5 steals and an AL leading 20 runs scored.  Don’t be surprised if the White Sox give Eaton a couple days off to ensure his availability for their playoff push.

Joe Panik- Lower back inflammation
After seeing no improvement from being held out of the lineup Sunday and Monday to rest a sore back, Panik was placed on the 15-day DL.  The Giants have determined that Panik will be much more valuable 100% percent healthy come September and October than having him try to battle through back issues the remainder of the year.   Ehire Adrianza will take Panik’s place at second base until he returns.

Pablo Sandoval- Jammed left thumb
Sandoval was removed from Friday’s game against Detroit after jamming his thumb.  The severity of his injury is still unclear, but it has been reported that Sandoval has struggled with a jammed thumb the majority of the year.  Josh Rutledge will man third base for the Sox if Sandoval is forced to miss any time.

AJ Burnett- Strained flexor tendon
The good news is Burnett’s UCL is still intact, the bad news is he will be sidelined for at least four weeks with a strained flexor tendon.  The Pirates will look to hold onto their lead on the NL wildcard while Burnett gets some rest.  If everything goes according to plan, Burnett will be able to get in a few starts for his fantasy owners before he man’s the top of the Pirates’ rotation in the postseason.

Mike Leake- Left hamstring strain
The Giants initial thought was Leake would just miss one start after he injured his hamstring during conditioning, but they have now decided to place him on the 15-day DL.  The move will allow Ryan Vogelsong to make two starts assuming Leake returns after the minimum 15 days.  Such as the case with Joe Panik, the Giants are doing everything they can to have a healthy roster for September and October.

Koji Uehara- Bruised right wrist
Koji’s 25th save was bittersweet as he took an Ian Kinsler line drive off of his wrist Friday.  Although x-rays came back negative, the Red Sox have chosen to place Koji on the 15-day DL.  Junichi Tazawa is projected to man the ninth inning for the time being.
