Jhonny Peralta

The St. Louis Cardinals may be used to dealing with injuries, but that doesn't make it any easier to lose a key player early in Spring Training. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta may miss two to three months with a possible ligament tear in his left thumb. This injury hits the Cardinals especially hard because they do not have a legitimate in-house replacement. Peralta hit .275/.334/.411 last season and was decent on defense after being excellent in 2014. St. Louis will need to turn to Jedd Gyorko or Cuban shortstop Aledmys Diaz until Peralta returns. Fantasy players, of course, have a few more options. Peralta is certainly worth keeping in a DL spot until he returns in leagues that have already drafted. For leagues that have yet to draft, this injury moves Peralta down a bit on draft boards, but he's still worth a mid to late round selection as long as you can draft a backup. In the meantime, guys like Cesar Hernandez (PHI) and Danny Espinoza (WAS) have shortstop eligibility and should be on waiver wires.
